The original Bendego iron meteorite was discovered in 1784. The main mass weighed over 5300kg and had to weighed with a railroad scale. The giant mass is now on display in a museum in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, the location of the original mass has produced many pieces of oxidized shale, which are remnants of the meteorite as it slowly weathered away before it was recovered.
