Fossil Puffer Fish Mouthplate (Chilomycterus), Bone Valley

This is a large example of a fossilized Puffer Fish mouthplate (Chilomycterus) that was recovered from the Peace River in the famous Bone Valley formation in Florida. These plates date from the Pleistocene to the Miocene periods (approx. 11,000 to 23,000,000 years ago). The mouthplates are very dense and hard, and they are the only part of this fish that is known to fossilize.
