Mastodon Tooth, Mammut Americanum, Pleistocene

This is a partial Mastodon tooth (Mammut Americanum) recovered from the Peace River in Florida's Bone Valley formation. These beasts roamed prehistoric Florida in the Pleistocene period before dying out about 12,000 years ago. They were a bit smaller than their counterparts, the Columbian Mammoth. While many mammoth teeth are regularly covered from the Peace River, Mastodon are more rare and complete examples are very scarce. This tooth is approx. 2/3rd complete and shows nice black enamel.
