Phosphorite Crystals in Matrix, Hand Specimen

This is a specimen of Phosphorite crystals in limestone matrix. This is one of the principle ores sought by the phosphate mining industry. This specimen was recovered from the phosphate-rich fossil deposits in Florida's Bone Valley Formation (Hawthorn Group, Hardee County, Peace River). This specimen is composed of soft, weathered limestone matrix with many small black phosphorite crystals embedded in it.
