Azuara impact crater, Zaragoza Spain (age : approx. 40m years, diameter : 30km)
Azuara is a controversial subject in the impact science field. It was initially recognized as a crater and entered into the authoritative Earth Impact Database. Subsequent research called into question it's impact origins and the topic remains contested.
This odd specimen was collected and labeled as an ejecta cobble with impact markings on it. Indeed, the circular white pits visible on the surface are not clasts and were reported to represent impacts from adjacent cobbles during the ejection phase of the impact event. This piece weighs approx. 219 grams and is about the size of a lemon. It has an old collection number written on it in sharpie marker.
