This is a fossilized portion of Mastodon tooth with matrix still attached. It represents approx. 1/4 of the crown portion of the tooth. Fully-intact mastodon teeth are extremely rare in this area and would fetch hundreds of dollars on the collector market. This piece is far from complete, but one of the largest and nicest I have found to date. There is some fossiliferous matrix still attached to the back side. Careful cleaning and sorting of the matrix material might produce a few micro-fossils from the same locality.

This piece was found on the southern Peace River (DeSoto county) in Florida's Bone Valley Formation (Hawthorn Group). It weighs approx. 47 grams and measures approx. 50mm x 25mm.
