NWA 400 meteorites were first recovered out of the Moroccan Sahara in September of 2000. Many stones of various sizes were found and samples were officially classified as a H5 chondrite. Berber nomads found the first stones near an oasis called "Oum Rokba" which means "Old woman's knee" in Berber. Early specimens of this meteorite were sold under the Oum Rokba name until it was officially named NWA 400.
