On March 26, 2003, a brilliant fireball was seen by thousands of witnesses across parts of four states. A shower of meteorite stones fell across a wide area, centering on Park Forest Illinois. The commotion caused a sensation and many objects and homes and struck by falling meteorites. Meteorite hunters from across the world came to the strewnfield and combed local neighborhoods and streets for meteorites. Later analysis at the Museum of Natural History showed the stones to be L5 chondrites.
At least two homes were struck (Garza) and damaged by falling meteorites, and several other manmade objects were also impacted. One of the other objects to be struck was Ed Grollemong's 1997 Plymouth Breeze sedan that was parked in his driveway. A meteorite destroyed his rear windshield and showered broken glass inside and around the car near the impact point. While Ed may have been angry or disappointed by the damage caused to his car, he must have been relieved later to discover that his misfortune was worth a small financial fortune. Meteorite hunters purchased the meteorite and the broken glass, which were then sold to collectors.
The lot being offered here consists of two specimens. A fresh internal fragment of the so-called Garza stone (that struck the Garza household), and a piece of glass from Mr. Grollemong's broken windshield. You get both the meteorite fragment and glass artifact in one lot. The meteorite fragment weighs approx .005g (5mg) and the glass fragment weighs approx. .060g (60mg).
