Ries Crater, Bayern Germany – (diameter : 24km wide, age : 15m years)
The Ries impact crater is the source of the famous Moldavite impact glass deposits and it is a natural landform that surrounds the city Nordlingen. Many buildings and walls in the old city are constructed out of this material which was readily available in the nearby quarries.
The specimen offered here is a "flaedle" impact bomb. These fine-grained lumps with odd shapes were ejected as glassy melt during the impact. This one weighs approx. 64 grams and shows melt texture.
Refer to the photos. The black centimeter cube is shown for scale and is not included. You are purchasing the specimen shown. Your purchase will include an ID label.
