This is a fossilized section of turtle shell that was collected from the Peace River (Bone Valley, Hawthorn Group, Florida). This is a large plastron and is one of many that once made up the entire shell. This specimen is a large example in good condition. It still shows some of the original texture on the outside surface. This piece was recovered from Pliocene and Pleistocene period deposits (approx. 11,000 to 5,000,000 years old). The exact species of turtle or tortoise this specimen comes from has not been identified.
