This is a fossilized section of turtle shell that was collected from the Peace River (Bone Valley Formation, Hawthorn Group, Florida, Hardee County). This is a large section made of up three associated scutes/plastrons that fit together like a puzzle. This specimen was recovered from Pleistocene period deposits and likely dates from the late Pleistocene (several thousand years ago). The exact species of turtle or tortoise this specimen comes from has not been identified.
