The Canyon Diablo meteorite crater is the world's most famous and well-preserved, large impact crater. At nearly a mile across, the crater is an iconic part of the remote Arizona desert and a stark reminder of a large iron asteroid impact that took place approx. 40,000 years ago. The crater now sits on property owned by the Barringer family and it has been named "Meteor Crater". The Meteor Crater gift shop greets tourists from around the world and a variety of meteorites and memorabilia is sold there.
This collector set includes a Coconino rock from the crater rim, shock pulverized rock-flour from the crater wall, iron shale fragments collected from around the perimeter of the crater, color brochure from the crater gift shop, and an information card. The meteorite iron shale sample comes with a labeled gemjar for safe storage. Note, the brochures come from the crater gift shop, and the other specimens were selected from an early 20th-century collection.
