This is a section of fossilized "petrified" wood that was recovered from the Peace River in Florida's famous Bone Valley formation (Hardee County, Hawthorn Group). The exact species of this specimen is not identified, but it likely dates from the Pliocene or Pleistocene periods (many thousands or millions of years old). This piece is still attached to the matrix rock, which is not commonly found and makes it an interesting hand specimen.
