Sahara 98234 is an early meteorite from the beginnings of the Saharan Gold Rush in 1998. It had an odd history. Like all of the "Sahara" meteorites recovered by the Labennes during this period, it has suspect find coordinates because the exact location of the strewnfield was being concealed by the finders. This was done to protect their financial interest in exploiting the strewnfield before other hunters could descend on it and pick it clean. This practice was not known at first, so the Meteoritical Society published these finds in the Bulletin. However, once word got out about what the Labennes were doing, the Meteoritical Society stopped publishing these finds. This meteorite is one of those that didn't get final publication in the Bulletin. It's unfortunate, because this is an interesting meteorite.
All I have to go on is a copy of Mike Farmer's original specimen card that has some data from the initial analysis results - which in most cases will end up in the Bulletin entry, which this find is missing. According to the specimen card, this meteorite is highly shocked at S6 and it contains the rare mineral Ringwoodite. The other info states that this meteorite is a brecciated L6 that was found in September of 1998. These specimens that I have were once part of a larger 36.72g slice was that was cut down into smaller slices.
The specimen offered here is a small part slice with two polished faces that weighs approx. .630g (630mg)
