Fulgurites are the result of a lightning strike which hits the ground and melts the dirt/sand/rock into a glassy material. These are often called "fossil lightning" or "petrified lightning". These examples are from an old collection that was labeled as "Arizona Desert" and "SW USA", but I do not know the exact locality. Each one is about an inch long.
