Campo del Cielo is an iron meteorite (coarse octahedrite) recovered from the Chaco province of Argentina. It was first discovered in 1576. The name "Campo del Cielo" means the "Field of Heaven" in the native language. Campo meteorites are considered a staple of the collector market and every collection should have an example of this classic meteorite.
The specimen offered here is an etched slab with silicate inclusions. The silicates are not the dominate phase here, so this specimen would not be considered a "silicated iron" in the technical sense. It represents a transitionary phase between straight iron with no inclusions and a "silicated Campo" which has more silicates than iron. This piece is etched on all the cut sides and one side was left natural. There is some mild oxidation in small spots, but overall this specimen is stable and it could be easily cleaned up. It weighs 203 grams. It measures approx. 72mm x 49mm x 10mm.
